Provider support

Material in this area has been developed to support providers of LEOTC services. Resources are provided to assist with the development, delivery and administration of LEOTC services.

All programmes are required to have explicit links with the National Curriculum, which consists of The New Zealand Curriculum and Te Marautanga o Aotearoa.

Providers should also be aware of key Ministry priority areas to ensure learning experiences have natural links made where possible. Information and updates can be found on the Ministry of Education website, which includes a searchable database of all New Zealand schools.

Providers are encouraged to make contact with staff in their regional Ministry office who have knowledge of local schools and may be able to offer suggestions to enhance your programmes.

Updates for the Ministry

The following template is for providers who are supplying the Ministry with monthly, bi-monthly, three-monthly or quarterly updates.

Updates should not be onerous so keep them succinct, but do ensure there is a clear picture of actual happenings as well as future bookings/events.

As information from updates is able to be reused in your milestone report this template has been changed to align with the six monthly report. More information is in the template document.

 

Evaluating your LEOTC programme

Evaluation of LEOTC programmes is a critical part of the quality assurance and improvement process for all providers. In 2011 NZCER conducted research on current evaluation practice across LEOTC providers and this report summarises that research and provides useful advice on improving your evaluation processes.

Provider trends, issues and themes

NZCER produced this document early in 2010 as a result of their work monitoring and evaluating LEOTC contracts. Key areas highlighted by providers are discussed, with summaries of approaches taken across the country. A synthesis is provided which includes suggestions and tips to further strengthen these areas of delivery.

 

Research for (MEANZ) Providers

Rachel Bolstad, NZCER, gave this presentation at the MEANZ Conference (2010). In this paper she posed and explored the following questions:

  • Who are NZCER, and how does our work as educational researchers intersect with your work as MEANZ educators?
  • What are some of the opportunities for educational research and knowledge-building in your sector?
  • Where can you go to follow up these ideas?

LEOTC in a regionally-based environment

NZCER produced this report to summarise the key findings of 12 Ministry-funded research and development projects. Twelve LEOTC service providers carried out self-reviews between March and June 2011 to identify strengths, gaps and opportunities for their service provision. This project aimed to inform and support the transition towards a regionally-focused funding and tendering process.

Historical significance and sites of memory

This article published by NZCER critiques a recent professional development course for history teachers that explored how students could use memorials and heritage sites to engage with the concept of significance and how this could contribute to them developing expertise in historical thinking. The course challenged teachers to consider historical significance in terms of disciplinary characteristics (as opposed to memory-history), to move away from the teacher transmission/storytelling model and to incorporate the key competencies in their teaching.
