Govett Brewster Art Gallery - New Plymouth District Council

The Govett- Brewster Art Gallery | Len Lye Centre brings learners face to face with contemporary art from Aotearoa and the Pacific. The home of pioneering kinetic artist and film maker Len Lye, the Gallery provides two well-equipped art studios, exhibition spaces and cinema which enable rich interdisciplinary learning that explores visual arts, performance and film, followed by ‘making workshops’ that foster learning, new skill development, and exploration of the themes and ideas within the exhibitions.

The team of educators - Kaiako Chris Barry, Rebecca Fawkner and Kaiako Māori Dallas Tahuaroa-King – bring rich teaching experience across ECE, primary, secondary, and special education, as well as expertise in performing and visual arts, poi manu, te reo, science and history.

The Gallery’s learning programmes are driven by Te Whare Taiao - a holistic learning framework which supports schools and learners to explore cross-curricular arts, te reo, local stories and histories and taiao (environment) learning, both on- and off-site, in person or digitally/remotely.

Te Whare Taiao comprises six kaupapa representing Orokohanga/Creation, Te Waonui a Tāne/Forest, Wai/Water, Karakia/Waiata, Papatūānuku/Land and Kai Wai Koe/Identity.

Education groups choose the kaupapa which best supports their local curriculum and relates to Te Whāriki, NZCA Curriculum Social sciences and TMOA Pūtaiao, and the Gallery educators create programmes to integrate kaupapa with Len Lye and Govett-Brewster exhibitions and resources.
