Tongariro National Trout Centre

The Tongariro National Trout Centre is based on the banks of the Tongariro River on the Central Plateau and offers a range of educational programmes for pupils from pre-school through to year 13. The Centre is currently working with schools to develop a portfolio of offerings around ecology and the environment.

With the largest fresh-water aquarium of native fish in the country, a fabulous museum showcasing the history and role of trout fishing in New Zealand and the large grounds with the fish hatchery, native forests and the rivers ensures that the range of subject areas we can cover is wide ranging. From measuring water quality, identifying native species and exploring the local iwi stories and history of the area we endeavour to work closely with schools and kura to ensure the time students spend with us reinforces their classroom studies. As well as the curriculum based activities there are a range of other activities for students such as learning to catch a rainbow trout in our kids fishing pond with the help of local volunteer anglers.

House of Science NZ

House of Science (HoS) has been delivering quality, hands-on science resources and teacher PLD to NZ primary and intermediate schools for many years. Materials are completely bi-lingual ensuring no school or kura is excluded. HoS is well placed to enrich classroom learning through supplementary student experiences that provide broad learning opportunities. The HoS ELC programme is tailored to enhance science learning in a local context. Please note schools need to be House of Science members to access the HoS ELC support.
